Last Saturday I caught the movie ‘The Artist’. Set in Hollywood in 1927 – 1932, the story tells of the two actors, popular silent screen star George Valentin who resists the industry’s shift to sound-films and struggles to stay relevant while Peppy Miller embodies modern age to talkies and rises to stardom. The reason why I decided to catch it was because it won best picture. Prior to watching the movie, I wondered whether this silent, black and white movie could capture my attention for 100 minutes. My faintest memory of black and white was ‘bewitched’ and Audrey Hepburn’s movies but all these slowly gravitated towards colour and these shows had sound dialogue!
