The voice from behind came in loud, clear and precise. “Excuse me, let me pass.” While we moved to give way, this simple sentence startled me and my sister. Not because we are caught off-guard, but because it came from our father speaking in English to us. My father never knew English, hence to utter the 5 words in audible English is a surprise. We later found out that he need to use these words in the course of his work so he had learned these from his supervisor. But that is all that he could speak in English.
