Rising Tide of Opportunities: Exploring A Career In The Port Industry
The Port Industry in Singapore stands as a testament to its transformation from a humble fishing village into a global economic powerhouse. Singapore’s ports are one of the world’s busiest and most strategically significant. Being nestled at the crossroads of international trade routes, the ports play a key factor in driving the nation’s economy and connectivity.
With the Tuas Port set to complete in the 2040s, the industry is poised for an even more exciting future. It is slated to be the world’s largest fully-automated container terminal, with an annual handling capacity of 65 million TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units). Tuas port will also integrate a new generation of technologies to optimise operations and improve efficiency.
Mr Arasu, Deputy Service Engineer in PSA Singapore on the nation’s Port Industry, “The career prospects are promising and there is an abundance of job opportunities in the industry. Currently, there is a high demand for prime movers, lashing specialists, technician specialists, ICT professionals, amongst many others. Even as we speak, there are new opportunities and jobs being created.”
As the port industry continues to expand, it is becoming a gold mine for job seekers and mid-career switchers looking to explore a fulfilling career in logistics and shipping. NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) has partnered with various port contractors on a career conversion programme to make a job transition into the Port Industry more seamless. e2i spoke with operational front-line staff to delve deeper into the port industry.
Charting A Course In The Port Industry
Mr Riduwan was a motor vehicle mechanic before he was employed by a service provider to become a prime mover driver at PSA. Despite having spent years at his previous role, he saw a minimal increase in his salary and was concerned about meeting his financial responsibilities. When his doctor advised him to change his lifestyle, Riduwan decided it was time for a career change.
Edging towards his mid 40s, Mr Riduwan craved a career that was stable and that could meet his needs. He chanced upon a Port Industry Recruitment Fair by e2i as he was scrolling Facebook and was intrigued by the opportunity. The working hours were more flexible, there was a competitive salary and he had the chance to scale the ranks in a prime mover driver role. Having had previous experience as an army driver, Mr Riduwan also possessed some transferable skills for this role.
Upon enrolling into the programme, Mr Riduwan underwent a one-month training course at PSA where he gained both theoretical knowledge and practical experience to become a prime mover driver. He was also attached to a mentor who guided him and advised him through his career switch.
Fast forward to present day, Mr Riduwan is a Class 3 prime mover driver who is upskilling to Class 4. Through e2i, he was able to land a role that supports his mid-career switch and career ambitions.
Anchoring A Role As Prime Mover Driver: What To Expect?
A prime mover driver working in one of PSA’s terminals typically deals with the business of transporting containers in the port. Their main responsibilities include:
- Trucking containers
- A heightened awareness of road surroundings
- Maintaining Safe Work Procedures (SWP) and Safe Operations Procedures (SOP)
- Ensuring good communication with peers and colleagues
- Running operations smoothly
Mr Haslam, an Operations Executive employed by PSA’s service provider, broke down the characteristics that employers are looking for in prime mover drivers, “We are looking for energetic individuals who are motivated and are comfortable with rotating shifts. They have to be disciplined and maintain safety awareness at all times. More importantly, they should possess a positive working attitude.”
As the job role requires rotating shifts and dealing with oversized vehicles, prime mover drivers have to be proactive in ensuring safety. If they are unfit to drive, they have to voice out to their employers. Prime mover drivers are also responsible for basic vehicle maintenance, daily vehicle checks and inspections.
While the job may entail challenges, the career progression opportunities continue to entice many to explore this path. Mr Haslam began his journey in the port industry as a prime mover driver. Through his commendable work ethic and commitment to improvement, Haslam has ascended the ranks from a mentor and foreman to his current role as an operations executive.
